The City of Austin Economic Development Department is excited to announce the next phase of redevelopment for the St. John Site at 7211 and 7309 North Interstate 35 (the former Home Depot & Chrysler Dealership). With a rich history dating back to the 1890s, the St. John Site has been a pivotal location in Central Texas’ African American community. After a community-driven vision was adopted in 2020, the next phase of redevelopment is set to unfold, marking a significant chapter in the site’s storied history.
Prior to its acquisition by the City of Austin in 2008, the St. John Site held significant historical importance for the African American community. Its roots trace back to the 1890s when the St. John Regular Missionary Baptist Association obtained 350 acres north of Austin to establish a freedman community with the St. John Industrial Institute and Orphanage as its anchor. In 2017, the Austin City Council directed staff to collaborate with the St. John Community in creating a new community vision, which was officially adopted in 2020.
“As we embark on the next phase of redevelopment for the St. John Site, we are not just revitalizing, we are preserving the legacy of the local community,” explains Sylnovia Holt-Rabb, Director of the Economic Development Department. “This transformative project will stand as a testament to the resilience and heritage of the past while fostering a vibrant and inclusive future for generations to come.”
In partnership with Greystar and the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA), the Council-adopted community vision is further bolstered by the Council-initiated Community Advisory Committee and esteemed consultant teams, including Cortez Consulting, Lemmo Architect and Design, Manhard Consulting, Meeks + Partners, Metcalfe Wolff Stuart & Williams and TBG Partners. Envisioned as a mixed-use, mixed-income property, the site will feature publicly-accessible open spaces and community-focused commercial areas. It will offer 526 units, with 50% dedicated to income-restricted affordable housing, while also expanding the current St. John Pocket Park to nearly triple its size, creating a larger open space complete with walking trails and a splash pad between St. John and Blackson Avenues.
“This event is the result of years of advocacy from the St. John neighborhood, citywide community leaders, and the District 4 office,” explains Council Member José “Chito” Vela, District 4. “The old Home Depot site is a shining example of how community organizers, elected officials, developers, and city government can collaborate on a financially viable and locally beneficial project that will serve as a neighborhood amenity for current and future Austinites. I am thrilled and honored to celebrate the demolition of these buildings with the coalition that made it possible."

St. John Community Celebration

The City of Austin invites the community to this free, family-friendly event featuring live music, local performances, children’s activities, breakfast tacos, and more. Please note that the demolition will not occur on August 12.

En asociación con Greystar y la Autoridad de Vivienda de la Ciudad de Austin (HACA, por sus siglas en inglés), la visión comunitaria adoptada por el Consejo se afianzó gracias al Comité Consultivo Comunitario iniciado por el Consejo, que incluye a Cortez Consulting, Lemmo Architect and Design, Manhard Consulting, Meeks + Partners, Metcalfe Wolff Stuart & Williams y TBG Partners. El sitio, imaginado como un inmueble de ingresos mixtos y usos múltiples, contará con espacios abiertos accesibles para el público y áreas comerciales enfocadas en la comunidad. Ofrecerá 526 unidades, con un 50% dedicado a viviendas accesibles restringidas por ingresos, además de que ampliará el actual St. John Pocket Park a casi el triple de su tamaño, creando un espacio abierto más grande completo con sendas para caminar y un patio de salpicaduras entre las avenidas St. John y Blackson.
