On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 9:07 a.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a collision between two motor vehicles in the southbound lanes of the 8100 block of North Mopac Expressway. One of the drivers remained on scene and cooperated with officers. The other driver, later identified as Jonhatan Rodriguez, was pronounced deceased on scene at 9:27 a.m.

Vehicular homicide detectives responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. Preliminary findings indicate that the collision involved a rear-end impact between two vehicles traveling southbound on North Mopac Expressway. Investigators believe the fatal injury is consistent with trauma sustained during the collision.

This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 88th fatal crash of 2025, resulting in 92 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2024, 87 fatal crashes resulted in 90 deaths.
