Over the past month, the Austin Police Department (APD) has intensified efforts to address impaired driving in Downtown Austin. As part of this initiative, Drug Recognition Expert Officers have been deployed on Friday and Saturday nights and are focusing on keeping our streets safe by targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
During these nights of increased enforcement, those officers made 13 DWI arrests, tested 21 drivers for impairment who were not arrested, issued 51 warnings to drivers exhibiting unsafe or erratic behaviors, and handed out 12 citations for various traffic violations related to impaired driving.
Here are some key statistics from our operation over the past three weeks:
- Nights of Operation: Fridays and Saturdays
- DWI Arrests: 13
- Drivers Tested (No Arrest): 21
- Warnings Given: 51
- Citations Issued: 12
APD’s priority is to protect our community. Every impaired driver we arrest is one less potential danger on the road. Our mission is not just about enforcement. It’s about sending the message that driving under the influence is not only illegal, but reckless and unacceptable. We would like to encourage everyone to make responsible decisions and use alternatives like ride-sharing services or designated drivers when drinking.
Don't drink and drive. #EndTheStreakTX #TXDOT
