On Sunday, May 4, 2025, at approximately 6:41 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 5700 block of Hammermill Run. When officers arrived on the scene, they located one victim, later identified at Neithan Jadiel Montenegro, with apparent gunshot wounds. Life-saving measures were attempted, but unfortunately, Mr. Montenegro was pronounced deceased on the scene at 7:08 a.m.
Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. Preliminary investigation revealed that a suspect, Victor Javier Orellana Carranza, had come to a residence in the 5700 block of Hammermill Run to look for his two-year-old son. The mother of the two-year-old lives at the residence with her 17-year-old son. When Orellana-Carranza arrived at the residence, it was occupied by the mother of the two-year-old, her 17-year-old son, and Neithan Montengro, who was a friend of the son. Orellana-Carranza entered the residence and assaulted the mother of the two-year-old. The 17-year-old son and Montenegro stopped him, which resulted in a physical altercation between the three of them. Orellana-Carranza left the residence, and made threats he would return. Orellano-Carranza returned with a firearm and shot at the son and Montenegro, striking Montenegro before fleeing the scene.
Over the course of the day, the APD Tactical Intelligence Unit was able to locate Orellano-Carranza, who was attempting to flee the country. APD patrol was able to quickly assemble multiple units which assisted in the apprehension.
Orellano-Carranza was booked into the Travis County Jail and is charged with 1st Degree Murder.
