FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Release Date: Jul. 17, 2025
Contact: APD Public Information Office     512-974-5017    Email

Case:  25-1941548

Date:  Sunday, July 13, 2025

Time:  11:35 p.m.

Location:  7300 Duval Street

Deceased victim:  Steven Conn, Black male, 11-25-1983

Arrested:  Jose Duron, Hispanic male, 22 years of age

On Sunday July 13, 2025, at approximately 11:35 p.m., Austin Police (APD) Department officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 7300 block of Duval Street. The caller advised that a female jumped out of the vehicle screaming for help, and a male waving a gun around. Additional information indicated that the subject left the scene in a white SUV on Duval Street towards East Saint John's Avenue. Officers arrived and made contact with a female, who stated she and her boyfriend had picked up an acquaintance named “Joey,” who was later identified as Jose Duron. Duron was in the backseat of the Bronco when he shot her boyfriend, later identified as Steven Conn, who was driving the Ford Bronco. The female exited the vehicle in fear of being shot, and Duron moved to the driver’s seat and drove off with Conn still in the vehicle.

Robbery Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. The investigation showed Duron had attempted to rob Conn and his girlfriend before driving off in Conn’s Ford Bronco.

Multiple units assisted to search for Conn as his whereabouts were unknown, and he was not reported to be in any hospital. Patrol units located the Ford Bronco the morning of July 14 in southeast Austin. No one was in the vehicle; however, blood was found inside. The Homicide unit joined the investigation, as did the Tactical Intelligence Unit. The search continued to try to locate Conn.

Aggravated robbery and Aggravated kidnapping warrants for Duron were signed by a judge as the search continued for Conn and Duron.

On July 15, investigators were able to follow digital trails of devices left in the Ford Bronco to find a general direction of travel. Officers and detectives from multiple units searched more than 200 acres of fields over the next two days searching for Conn.

Finally, on the evening of July 15, members of the Violent Crimes Task Force were able to act on information provided to them by the APD Digital Forensics Unit and the APD Crime Analysts to further check areas of interest. They were able to locate the body in a field just north of 6400 Loyola Ln. Conn was found to be clearly deceased and pronounced deceased at 7:24 p.m.

The warrants for Duron were changed to Capital Murder and APD Tac Intel was able to locate Duron on July 16, in North Austin and take him into custody for the warrant.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS. You may submit your tip anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477.

This case is being investigated as Austin's 33rd homicide of 2025.
