Austin Gains Two New Cultural Districts

Govalle and the 5th Street Mexican American Heritage Corridor Receive State Recognition

On September 4, the state delivered official recognition of the 5th Street Mexican American Heritage Corridor and Govalle Cultural Districts.  This announcement comes as a direct result of an award-winning Economic and Cultural District Framework Policy prepared by the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department.

This declaration officially doubles the volume of Austin’s cultural districts to four, adding to the existing Six Square and Red River Cultural Districts.

Cultural and economic districts recognize particular communities for local preservation, arts, and business growth, among others. These districts play an important role in Austin, demonstrating the City’s commitment to supporting unique cultural and economic value for the public.  For more information about the City of Austin's Cultural Districts, visit Economic and Cultural District Development
