On Monday, February 2, 2026, at approximately 2:16 p.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a crash that involved a motor vehicle and a pedestrian in the 1100 block of Bastrop Highway in the northbound lanes.  Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures. The pedestrian, later identified as Juan Santos Castro, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver remained on scene, was not impaired, and cooperated with the investigation.
 
This incident is being investigated as Austin’s seventh fatal crash of 2026, resulting in seven fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2025, five fatal crashes resulted in five deaths.
