Time: 3:45 p.m.
Location: 201 West 5th Street
Deceased victim: Unidentified male
On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 3:45 p.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a disturbance call at the Plains Capital Bank located at 201 West 5th Street. When officers arrived, they made contact with security guards and observed a man who was lying on his back and appearing to snore. When officers attempted to make contact with the man, he was unresponsive. Officers began life-saving measures until Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) arrived, however, he was pronounced deceased at 4:46 p.m. At this time, the male decedent has not been identified.
Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists responded to the scene. The investigation has shown that the male had previously entered the bank on multiple occasions and harassed employees. On this occasion, security asked him to leave the building. During the interaction, the man, who was in a wheelchair, punched a security guard in the face. The security guard then struck him back in self-defense, causing him to fall to the ground.
The man got back up, gathered his belongings, and picked up his wheelchair. He then laid back down on the floor, which is where officers and ATCEMS later located him.
The case was reviewed with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, and no charges will be filed. The incident was determined to be an act of self-defense.
