APD Continues to Investigate the August 12, 2026, Officer-Involved Shooting at 824 Camino La Costa

The Austin Police (APD) continues to investigate the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 8:23 a.m., at 824 Camino La Costa. 
 
APD understands the importance of building trust within our community and will continue working diligently to develop a strong and trusting relationship. As per our policy, we share information about a critical incident in a timely manner. APD is working with Austin Police Oversight (APO) and the City of Austin to release this information today. The news release includes links to the relevant audio and video from the ongoing investigation. The Travis County District Attorney's Office and APO have reviewed the audio and video materials identified for public release. The details provided today are preliminary, as we are very early in the investigation.  
 
The officer who discharged his Department-issued firearm has the following years of service with the Department: 

• Officer Stephen Abbott – 12 years

Per APD protocol, the officer has been placed on administrative leave.   
 
APD will conduct two concurrent investigations into this incident: a criminal investigation conducted by the APD Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney's Office and an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, with oversight from Austin Police Oversight.  
 
Transparency and accountability are key elements needed to serve and build relationships within the Austin community. Below is the chain of events related to this critical incident that will help you understand what took place. The details provided are preliminary, as we are very early in the investigation.  
 
On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 8:23 a.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a report of a male suspect who had assaulted a person and put a handgun to the victim’s head in the area of 824 Camino La Costa. The victim left the area and met with officers at a nearby Burger King. 
 
The victim provided officers with a description of the suspect, who was described as a Black male wearing dark shorts and carrying a handgun. Officers began searching the area for the suspect. 
 
At 8:27 a.m., Officer Stephen Abbott located the suspect, later identified as Gregory Lane, 36 years of age, standing in the parking lot of the Centro Studio Homes apartment complex. Officer Abbott exited his vehicle and gave commands for Mr. Lane to drop his gun. Mr. Lane ran behind a white vehicle, and Officer Abbott took cover behind his patrol vehicle. Mr. Lane fired at Officer Abbott, and Officer Abbott returned fire. Mr. Lane then ran away into the apartment complex. 
 
Mr. Lane then entered an apartment within the complex and remained inside. Officers established a perimeter around the apartment and began communicating with him. He stated that he was alone and wanted to speak with a federal agent. Members of APD SWAT, APD Negotiators, the APD Violent Crimes Task Force, and other specialized resources responded to assist with the incident. 
 
APD Negotiators quickly established communication with Mr. Lane and worked to peacefully resolve the situation using de-escalation techniques. At 9:41 a.m., Mr. Lane indicated he was going to open the door. Officers continued giving him commands, and at 9:42 a.m., Mr. Lane was observed standing at the window with his hands raised. At 9:45 a.m., officers took him into custody. He has been charged with Attempted Capital Murder, a First-Degree Felony, and Aggravated Assault, a Second-Degree Felony. 

During the investigation, detectives located a firearm inside of Mr. Lane’s apartment. Detectives also located shell casings and vehicles with bullet holes in the area. 
 
The original victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being punched in the face and struck in the head with a handgun, by Mr. Lane. Neither the suspect nor the officer were injured during the incident. 
 
This incident was captured on the officer’s body-worn and patrol vehicle dash cameras. These videos do not always capture everything the officer or witnesses saw or experienced during the incident; however, the footage helps us understand what occurred.  
 
In compliance with state law that prohibits the release of certain information and to maintain the integrity of the investigation, the materials have been redacted.  
 
The materials include comprehensive footage of the officer’s actions and contain graphic content and language. Viewer discretion is advised.
