Arrested: Nelson Egwu, Black male, 64 years of age

During the month of September 2026, the Austin Police (APD) Animal Cruelty Unit issued 11 arrest warrants ranging from 3rd Degree felonies to Class A misdemeanors.

On August 31, 2026, APD officers responded to 13625 Coomer Path regarding two dogs living inside an extremely hot and unsanitary garage without adequate access to food or water. One dog was found deceased and severely underweight, while the other dog was found underweight and chained in an area with accumulated feces and urine. A subsequent necropsy of the deceased dog determined that he died from heat exposure, potentially compounded by dehydration and poor body condition. A third dog was also on the property. The two living dogs were immediately provided with food and water and taken to Austin Animal Services (AAS) for evaluation. They are expected to make a full recovery and will be put up for adoption.

Based on the investigation, probable cause was established for Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals, and two arrest warrants were issued for Nelson Egwu, 3rd Degree Felony for the deceased dog, and a Class A misdemeanor related to the chained dog. Egwu was taken into custody later that evening and booked into the Travis County Jail.
