On Thursday, May 1, 2025, at approximately 6:59 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers and Austin Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) responded to a call that reported someone was shot at the Shell station located at 2001 E. Riverside Drive. Officers arrived on scene and located an unresponsive man with apparent gunshot wounds to his torso on the ground in the parking lot. Another man and a woman were also on scene. The injured male was later identified as Marcos Valerio-Rodriguez. Valerio-Rodriguez was pronounced deceased on scene.

Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. The investigation showed Valerio-Rodriguez arrived intoxicated at his girlfriend’s place of employment, which is located next to the Shell station. A verbal argument broke out between Valerio-Rodriguez and his girlfriend outside of the business. Eventually, she went back inside her workplace and Valerio-Rodriguez left the scene. A short time later, Valerio-Rodriguez returned to his girlfriend's workplace and banged on the door. A male bystander intervened, at which point in time Valerio-Rodriguez pulled a knife on him. The bystander then pulled a gun and shot Valerio-Rodriguez. Multiple witnesses were on scene and confirmed the order of events. The male bystander was cooperative and interviewed by Homicide detectives.

No charges are being filed at this time. This is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public’s safety.
