On Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 2:24 a.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a motor collision involving a sports vehicle and an 18-wheeler in the 11400 block of Research Boulevard NB on the proper. Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures on the driver of the sports vehicle, later identified as Caleb Thomas Petersen, and transported him to a local hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital at 3:07 a.m. The driver of the 18-wheeler remained on the scene, was not intoxicated, and is cooperating with the investigation.

This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 31st fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 31 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2025, 34 fatal crashes resulted in 38 deaths.
