On Sunday, July 5, 2026, at 5:21 a.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a collision involving a motor vehicle and a bicyclist in the 1800 block of West 35th Street. The unidentified suspect vehicle, described as a 2016-2018 blue Honda Civic with front end damage, fled the scene following the collision. The bicyclist, later identified as Chaw-Long Shih, was transported to a local hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced deceased three days later on July 8.

This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 43rd fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 43 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2025, 50 fatal crashes resulted in 54 deaths.
