Traffic Fatality in the 4600 block of N. Mopac Expressway NB

On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at approximately 4:59 a.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a fatal collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian on a personal scooter in the 4600 block of North Mopac Expressway NB.

Preliminary reports indicate that the pedestrian on the scooter was traveling against the flow of traffic. The driver of the vehicle attempted to avoid the collision by changing lanes; however, the pedestrian on the scooter steered in the same direction, resulting in a collision. The driver of the vehicle stopped, called 9-1-1, remained on scene, and is cooperating with the investigation. The pedestrian, later identified as Lee Anthony Chavez -Avera was pronounced deceased on scene.

This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 54th fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 54 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2025, 68 fatal crashes resulted in 72 deaths.
