On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at approximately 5:29 a.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a single vehicle collision in the 7200 block of E. Highway 290 westbound lanes. The single occupant driver, later identified as Alex Benjamin Cuz Caal, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Days later the driver was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
 
This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 27th fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 27 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2025, 26 fatal crashes resulted in 30 deaths.
