On Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 9:18 p.m., Austin Police (APD) patrol officers responded to a collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian located on the E. SH 71 WB to US Hwy 183 NB ramp. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, was not impaired, and cooperated with the investigation. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene.
 
This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 52nd fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 52 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2025, 66 fatal crashes resulted in 70 deaths.
