On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at approximately 2:26 p.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian in the intersection of North Lamar Boulevard and Rutland Drive. Following the incident, the suspect vehicle fled the scene. The pedestrian involved, later identified as Mario Alfonso Garcia Gonzalez, was pronounced deceased on scene.

This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 20th fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 20 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2025, 21 fatal crashes resulted in 25 deaths.
