Get unwanted clothing picked up from your front door
By Paul Bestgen
Getting rid of unwanted clothing is easier than ever. City of Austin residential customers can now schedule on-demand clothing and textiles collection. Just gather the items you no longer want, book an appointment and set them outside—we’ll handle the rest.
Schedule your appointment
Book your appointment through the Austin Recycles app, online or by calling 3-1-1. You’ll receive an email confirmation with your reservation details, along with a reminder before your collection day.
Accepted items
Shirts, sweaters and pants are accepted, along with shoes, coats and curtains. Undergarments are not accepted. Be sure to review the full list of accepted and non-accepted items before setting anything out.
Set out your items
Place your items out by 5:30 a.m. on your scheduled day and follow the set-out guidelines. Collections are limited to one closed 13-gallon bag to keep items clean and dry. The plastic bag will be recycled. Please do not use boxes or other containers.
Set the bag in an area that staff can easily access, such as near your front door or garage. Do not place it at the curb or next to a cart, or it may be collected as extra trash.
Where items go
This program helps keep clothing out of the landfill. Items are taken to the Recycle and Reuse Center, where the City’s contracted vendor, currently Goodwill, picks them up for reuse or recycling. Usable items may be resold in stores, while others may be repurposed into materials like cleaning rags.
