Public Comment Opens on Proposed City Charter Amendments

The Austin City Council invites the public to give input at a July 28, 2026 meeting on proposed amendments to the Austin City Charter. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and will take place at Austin City Hall Council Chambers (301 W 2nd St.).

As part of the agenda, the City Council will consider including proposed amendments to the Austin City Charter on the November 2026 election ballot. Proposed amendments include those presented by the Charter Review Commission, as well as potential citizen-submitted amendments.  

Speakers must register and will have two minutes to provide testimony on each amendment being considered.  

• Remote or in-person speakers can register to participate starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 24 until noon on Monday, July 27 at austintexas.gov/council/meetings.
• Starting at noon on Monday, July 27, in-person speakers may register in person at Austin City Hall until 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28.  

The City Council will not take action on the proposed amendments at the July 28 meeting.  

During the July 30 City Council meeting, which starts at 10 a.m., the City Council will accept public comment as well as discuss and consider placing recommended charter amendments on the November 2026 ballot, in addition to budget discussions. 

Lastly, on Aug. 6, the City Council will take public comment, discuss and consider calling a special charter election for November 2026.
