Age-Friendly Austin
Building an Age-Friendly Austin
We want Austin to be a welcoming place for people of all ages.
What is the Age-Friendly Austin Action Plan?
The Age-Friendly Austin (AFA) Action Plan is a pledge to help older adults to live healthy, happy lives. The Commission on Aging, City staff, AARP (American Association of Retired Persons), community partners and local leaders created a plan based on the WHO Age-friendly Cities Framework and focuses on:
Outdoor Spaces and Buildings: Safe, accessible public places, parks and City buildings.
Transportation: Affordable, reliable and accessible ways to get around.
Housing: Safe, affordable housing so people can age in place.
Social Participation: Low-cost and accessible that help reduce isolation.
Respect and Social Inclusion: Programs that value older adults and fight ageism.
Community Engagement and Employment: Chances for older adults to work, volunteer and take part in community life.
Communication and Information: Clear, timely information that is easy to find and use.
Community and Health Services: Accessible, affordable health care and local support services.
What’s Next?
The 2026–2030 Age-Friendly Austin Action Plan is being drafted. It will guide Austin’s age-friendly work for the next five years. The plan addresses challenges in three main areas.
Social Engagement, Connection and Inclusion
Health, Mobility and Accessibility
Housing and Economic Security
