Office of Vital Records

The Office of Vital Records (OVR) registers and maintains births, deaths and fetal deaths that occur within the full purpose city limits of Austin.

Get a birth or death certificate

OVR issues certified copies of vital event records (birth and death certificates); issues required permits and documents to funeral homes and mortuary services; provides technical assistance related to registration of home births and deaths with no funeral home involvement; and provides assistance to various entities including Austin/Travis County law enforcement. 

OVR has been awarded the Texas Vital Statistics’ Five Star Service Award for Local Registration each year since 2002. This award honors Vital Statistics Partners who go above and beyond the duties of vital events registration and issuance by providing excellent customer service, security, and data quality in Texas.
