Sister Cities Agreement between Austin, Texas and Limerick, Ireland.

The City of Austin Economic Development Department is pleased to announce the signing of a Sister Cities Agreement between Austin, Texas, and Limerick, Ireland. This milestone agreement, formalized during a ceremony attended by Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Limerick Mayor John Moran on Thursday, December 5, establishes a strong foundation for meaningful partnerships in education, culture, business, and innovation between the two cities. The ceremony also featured the unveiling of the Limerick Sister City sign outside Austin City Hall.

“This Sister Cities Agreement with Limerick represents a new chapter in Austin’s global outreach,” said Mayor Kirk Watson. “Together, we will create opportunities for cultural exchange, economic collaboration, and shared innovation that will benefit both our communities and foster a lasting friendship across the Atlantic.”

The agreement outlines mutual commitments to collaborate in areas such as business development, science and technology, the creative economy, education, tourism, and urban development. It also establishes a framework for maintaining direct communication between the cities through annual meetings and exchanges of ideas and best practices.

“We are delighted to formalize our partnership with Austin, a city just like ours, renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit and creative energy,” said Mayor of Limerick, John Moran. “Limerick is Austin’s closest E.U. city neighbor. We are proud to already be home to a number of Austin businesses, just as Austin has become a valued home for many originally from Limerick. We see this agreement as a chance to deepen connections, share knowledge, and foster mutual growth. Building a bridge of collaboration is how we will inspire progress and enrich both our cities.”

This Sister Cities Agreement supports the City of Austin Economic Development Department’s strategic goal of fostering global partnerships to enhance economic and cultural opportunities for residents and businesses. It exemplifies Austin’s commitment to strengthening its international relationships and promoting equity, collaboration, and shared prosperity.

With this agreement, Austin now has 13 Sister Cities and 2 Friendship Cities. The Austin Sister Cities Program is managed by Austin Sister Cities International (ASCI), a community-led initiative comprising dedicated volunteers who oversee the relationships through various committees.
