City of Austin
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASERelease Date: Dec. 10, 2025
Demonstrating a firm commitment to transparency, accountability and inclusive community partnership, the City of Austin has opened applications for the inaugural South Austin Housing Navigation Center Advisory Board. This step marks a significant milestone in advancing the City’s new housing navigation center.
“This project is strongest when community voices lead the way,” said Director of Homeless Strategies and Operations, David Gray. “Residents asked for a seat at the table, and the Advisory Board provides exactly that. We are grateful for the feedback we received and look forward to welcoming applicants who want to help shape a center designed to improve lives and strengthen our city.”
Site Selection and Council Approval
On Sept. 3, the City announced a potential site for the center at 2401 South Interstate Highway 35 Frontage Road, 78741, and Austin Homeless Strategies and Operations (HSO) launched a public engagement process to gather input from residents and stakeholders. The Austin City Council then voted on Oct. 9 to authorize the purchase of the property, solidifying the next steps toward development.
Community Engagement and Advisory Board Formation
During the initial engagement period from Sept. 3 through Oct. 8, community members emphasized the importance of ongoing communication and collaboration to support the center’s mission. In response, Austin HSO committed to establishing a Center Advisory Board to ensure consistent community involvement.
From Nov. 4 through Nov. 18, the public was invited to review and comment on a draft advisory board charter. The final charter incorporates a broad range of stakeholder input and clearly outlines the board’s purpose, responsibilities, structure, and meeting protocols.
Application Process
Applications are now open for 13 seats on the Advisory Board. Residents and stakeholders can access the application, review background materials, read a questions-and-answers section, and view the final charter on the Housing Navigation Center’s Speak Up Austin webpage at www.speakupaustin.org/housingnavigation.
The application will be available from Wednesday, Dec. 10, through noon Wednesday, Jan. 21. The six-week window ensures residents have ample time to express interest in serving on the board.
