Suspect (Arrested): Daniel Vasquez, White male, 30 years of age
On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 11:47 a.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a disturbance at the Austin Central Library, located at 710 West Cesar Chavez Street. The initial call reported a male stomping on another person’s head on the fourth floor of the library.
When officers arrived, Chief Lisa Davis, who was at the library for a community meeting, had already detained the suspect. Officers located the victim unconscious on the floor with significant injuries. Officers began rendering aid until Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators determined the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Daniel Vasquez, struck the victim in the head without provocation while the victim was seated at a computer. The force of the punch caused the victim to fall to the floor unconscious. Vasquez then stomped on the victim’s head multiple times before returning to his computer.
Vasquez was transported to the Travis County Jail and charged with Aggravated Assault with Serious Bodily Injury.
On June 12 2026, at 6:03 a.m., Mr. Mabry succumbed to the wounds he sustained during the assault. An autopsy was conducted by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. On October 14, 2026, investigators received the Medical Examiner’s Office report which determined the cause of death to be complications of blunt head trauma and the manner to be homicide.
Daniel Vasquez was ultimately charged with murder in the death of Mr. Mabry on October 14, after the results of the autopsy were received by the Austin Police.
