The City of Austin's Neighborhood Centers help families in need with free services like food help, job search help, health screenings, bus passes, and more.

Ways we can help for free

Health services by RNs (Registered Nurses)

  • Check your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar
  • Pregnancy testing and referrals if needed
  • Help coordinate your health care if you have a chronic disease
  • Refer you to a doctor or clinic if needed

Basic services

  • Food pantry and other food help
  • Child safety seats
  • Notary services
  • Help you fill out forms and applications
  • Bus passes

Social services

  • Short-term counseling
  • Help you find a job
  • Help you apply for other benefits

Information and referrals

  • Help find other resources in the community
  • Training and education
  • Rent and utility help
  • Help you find clinics, doctors, and health insurance

Other services at different times of the year

  • Fans -- in the spring; call for exact dates
  • Flu vaccine -- in the fall; call for exact dates

Rent and utility help

Neighborhood Services Unit has limited funds for Rent and Austin Energy assistance. 

We will no longer be accepting walk-in requests for Rent or Austin Energy assistance at neighborhood centers. All requests must go through the Rent & Utility line. Call 512-972-5780.

 If you need other assistance such as food, clothing, formula, or diapers please call your local Neighborhood Center. 

Requirements for rent and utility help
  • Must be experiencing a financial crisis.
  • Must be a resident of Austin/Travis County.
  • Must be a renter with your name on lease or contract.
  • Rent/utility bill must be PAST DUE in order to receive help.
  • Household income must be at or below 200% Federal Poverty Income Guidelines (FPIG). (See table, 18.2KB)
  • Must have proof of recent crisis or financial trouble causing you to need help with your bills.
    • Examples may include but are not limit to:
      • Losing a job or having fewer hours
      • Medical bills, sickness
      • A member leaving the household
      • New family or household members
      • Funeral expenses
