Austin Transportation and Public Works Programs

Austin's pedestrian program is focused on expanding our sidewalk network, developing pedestrian crossings, and implementing other programmatic efforts to improve the comfort, safety, and connectivity of our city’s pedestrian network.

The purpose of the Residential Permit Parking (RPP) program is to reduce the impacts of non-resident parking in neighborhoods with limited street space, particularly adjacent to commercial properties.

Streets, sidewalks, trails, and alleys are for everyone's use as part of the right-of-way (ROW). Austin's Right-of-Way Maintenance program is supported by teams from both Street & Bridge Operations and Urban Forestry.

The Safe Routes to School Program helps children choose active modes of transportation to get to school. We aim to make sure elementary and middle school students across Austin can walk, bike and roll safely.

The Sidewalk Program is responsible for the City of Austin's sidewalk and shared streets network. The work of the Sidewalk Program is guided by the Sidewalks, Crossings, and Shared Streets Plan.

The Speed Management Program improves safety on Austin streets by reducing speeds and serious crashes. The City of Austin updates speed limits using data and installs traffic calming treatments on priority streets to support safer travel.

The Street Banner Program provides community nonprofits, arts and cultural groups, and other organizations with an effective tool to promote events, engage the public, raise awareness and communicate key messages to Austinites and visitors.

Street impact fees help fund roadway capacity projects prompted by new development. The Austin City Council adopted ordinances creating a Street Impact Fee Program on Dec. 10, 2020.

Austin Transportation and Public Works uses various strategies to improve and maintain City of Austin-owned roadway surfaces.
