Givens Pool, Park, and Recreation Center Improvements

Givens Pool

On June 7, the Givens District Park Pool reopens to the public for future generations to enjoy. New amenities include lap lane pool, zero-entry activity pool (toddler pool), spray ground features, diving board, bathhouses, family restroom, training/party room, picnic pads with shade structures, and aquatic office space. For more information about the project, visit AustinTexas.gov/GivensPool.

Givens District Park is located east of Downtown Austin. This historically African American community was established in the beginning of the twentieth century. The 40-acre district park was acquired in 1957. The pool was developed in 1958. In 1962 the park was named after Dr. Everett H. Givens (1888-1962), dentist, World War I veteran, and beloved civic leader. Givens District Park is a highly valued open space in East Austin. The park contains a playground, two ball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, a pavilion and numerous open lawn areas for passive recreation and numerous small trails through tree and vegetated areas.

The Givens Recreation Center opened to the community in 1979, providing programs for youth and adults. On February 17, 2025, Givens Recreation Center closed for renovations and its programming transitioned to the Britton, Durst, Howard, and Spence Building (also known as the Chestnut House) at 1183 Chestnut Ave. until the improvements are completed. Key upgrades taking place at the center include:

  • HVAC System Replacement: For improved air quality and energy efficiency.
  • New Roof Installation: A durable flat membrane roof for long-term protection.
  • Gymnasium Roof and Solar Panel re-installation
  • Gymnasium Enhancements: New windows to brighten and improve the space.
  • Accessibility Improvements: Interior upgrades to ensure ADA compliance and inclusivity.
  • Outdoor Upgrades: Replacement of concrete driveways and sidewalks for improved safety and access.
