Land Management and Wildfire Mitigation in 2025

The Land Management Program is comprised of four full-time employees who plan, oversee, and implement large scale fuel mitigation and restoration projects, interact with the community, and handle routine or special tasks such as maintenance and repair of equipment and infrastructure needed to keep the program running.

We conducted 520 acres of wildfire mitigation and ecological restoration treatments in 22 parks in fiscal year 2025. This work involved mechanical fuel reduction, selective thinning for forest health, invasive species removal, prescribed burns, planting and seeding, as well as several volunteer projects.

Wildfire mitigation is a key priority for Austin Parks and Recreation. The Austin Parks and Recreation land management plan, approved by the Austin City Council in September 2023, guides our efforts to actively restore natural areas to mitigate wildfire risk and provide vital ecosystem services to the Austin area.
