Suspect: Dexter Avery Carrington, Black male, 32 years of age
On September 8, 2025, Austin Police (APD) were contacted by a security manager from a large retail rental car company regarding a stolen 2025 Nissan Altima that had been tracked to a dealership in Austin. The vehicle had been unlawfully removed from a secured lot in Houston, Texas.
Later the same day, the suspect sold the stolen Altima to a car dealership in Austin for $17,000, using a fraudulent Florida title. After being alerted by the rental car company, the dealership canceled the payment and secured the vehicle. When the suspect returned to the dealership, he was detained by officers without incident.
During a post-Miranda interview, the suspect claimed he had purchased the vehicle and sold it to support his family. However, inconsistencies in his statements, along with fraudulent documentation, confirmed that he unlawfully appropriated the vehicle.
As a result of this investigation, six felony charges have been filed by APD and HPD, with additional charges likely to follow as the case develops.
The suspect has been linked to approximately 20 similar auto theft cases, including four previously investigated by the Houston Police Department (HPD). His method of operation involves using a female accomplice to rent vehicles, duplicate keys, install tracking devices, and later steal the vehicles after they are returned. The suspect would then fraudulently obtain Florida vehicle titles using counterfeit Texas titles and sell the stolen vehicles to unsuspecting buyers.
