Two weeks of free, family-friendly events celebrating Arbor Day and Monarch Appreciation Day begin October 18

The Roots & Wings Festival returns this fall for its 8th annual celebration, bringing together Arbor Day and Monarch Appreciation Day in a citywide tribute to Austin’s vibrant natural world. From October 18 through November 2, Austinites of all ages are invited to join in two weeks of community-led events celebrating the trees, plants, fungi, soil, and wildlife that make up our city’s rich urban ecosystem.

“Roots & Wings is a great opportunity to connect our community with the outdoors and enjoy the wonder of our local ecosystem,” said Zach Baumer, Director of Austin Climate Action and Resilience. “Together, we can celebrate the beauty of nature in our neighborhoods and take meaningful steps toward a greener future.”

Since its launch in 2018, the Roots & Wings Festival has grown from a single-day celebration into a two-week, citywide event, connecting tens of thousands of residents with nature in their own neighborhoods. This year’s festival will feature over 60 public events and 80 school-based celebrations across the city, engaging an estimated 25,000 community members. Events will range from tree plantings and pollinator walks to art workshops, guided hikes, educational programs, and family-friendly nature festivals — all designed to deepen Austin’s connection with its urban forest and the life it supports.

By bringing together residents, schools, and organizations across Austin, the Roots & Wings Festival strengthens the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship, biodiversity, and community connection.
