A flyer shows two people bicycling on a trail. Text: Our Future 35 Austin's Cap and Stitch program. Open House.

The open house takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ACC's Highland campus.

Austin, Texas  – The public is being asked to share their ideas about the types of public amenities and amount of green space desired on new public spaces being created over I-35 in Central Austin.

The Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) I-35 Capital Express Central rebuilding project will provide the City the opportunity to reconnect East and West Austin with caps or platform decks. At the city’s Our Future 35 open house on Saturday, May 18, the City will share early concept sketches of the caps for the public to consider.

Event Details

Date: Saturday, May 18
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Location: Austin Community College Highland Campus, 6018 Wilhelmina Delco Drive, Building 2000, Austin, TX 78752

During the open house, attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide input on the project's vision, desired amenities and building density
  • Get a first look at early concept sketches of the potential I-35 caps

City staff will be available to discuss ideas and answers questions.

Transportation:

  • MetroRail: Take the red line to Highland Station
  • Bus: CapMetro bus routes serving campus include the 7, 324, 337 and 350
  • Bike: Bike racks are located all around the Highland Campus, including both ends of the paseo at Building 2000.
  • Driving: Free parking at the Austin Community College parking garage.

Public preferences gathered at the open house will be used to refine the structural loading requirements for cap locations, needed by TxDOT by October to finish engineering design.

This family-friendly event will feature activities such as balloon artists, face painting and free childcare, ensuring that parents can fully participate in discussions. Food, drinks and music will also be provided.

For those unable to attend in person, the City will hold a virtual webinar on Wednesday, May 22, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants can register for the webinar at bit.ly/OF35Zoom0522.

Community engagement is crucial to the success of the Our Future 35 project. This event will be complemented by a four-week virtual open house and community survey to be released later this month.
