A Community Conversation about the Future
“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape what’s next for the East Riverside Corridor in a way that serves the people who live here now,” said Austin City Council Member José Velásquez, who represents District 3, home to the corridor. “I’m excited about this chance to introduce these projects to our community and to bring together staff from across the City and our partners at CapMetro and ATP.”
The City’s goal for the event is to start a conversation with residents about what they value in their neighborhoods and where their local government can do more to support their housing, transportation and community needs.
At the East Riverside Open House, community members will have opportunities to:
- Learn about City-led projects happening along East Riverside Drive and nearby neighborhoods, including the East Riverside Corridor Planning Initiative.
- Explore early ideas for the Grove-Riverside Site, a 125-acre site that includes the Tokyo Electron campus purchased by the City in 2024. Potential options include mixed-use development that incorporates affordable housing that reflects local needs.
- Understand upcoming transit improvements, including the future Austin Light Rail, services included in CapMetro’s Transit Plan 2035, and new pedestrian and bike paths.
- Provide feedback to City of Austin staff to ensure community voices help guide the corridor’s future and the Grove-Riverside Site vision.
Community input is critical. Together, we can ensure that these projects create safe, affordable housing, vibrant community spaces and sustained opportunities for those who have built their lives and families here.
About the Grove-Riverside Site Development
Led by the City of Austin, this community-driven effort seeks to reimagine over 125 acres of public land in Southeast Austin. Together, we can create a vision that meets the community’s greatest needs: affordable homes, better transit access, thriving small businesses, parks and shared public spaces. While the site is still in the planning phase—no construction or developer has been selected—public input will shape what’s possible. Through community meetings, surveys and small group conversations, your voice will help ensure this land serves the people who live here today and for generations to come.
About the East Riverside Planning Initiative
The City is partnering with the community to update the existing East Riverside Corridor Vision Plan and Regulating Plan, in alignment with the Equitable Transit-Oriented Development (ETOD) initiative. The purpose of the plan is to guide the growth and redevelopment of the East Riverside Corridor and to ensure that future changes in the corridor benefit everyone who lives, works and plays along the corridor.
