The George Washington Carver Museum and Carver ATX Foundation, in collaboration with The Office of Arts, Culture, Music, and Entertainment proudly announce the 6th Annual Stay Black and Live Juneteenth festival, set to take place at 1165 Angelina Street, Austin, Texas 78702, from Tuesday, June 10 to Thursday, June 19. This multi-day activation promises an unforgettable celebration of Black culture, history, and resilience.
Tuesday, June 10, the festival's annual Free Your Mind Symposium Series kicks off with a film screening of Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom, a film by Ya’ke Smith, from 12 - 1:30 p.m. The evening opens with a lecture from Dr. Simone Browne, Associate Professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin from 6 - 7:30 p.m. From 8:30 - 9 p.m., Game Designer and Small Black Museum Residency alum, Temitope Olujobi, returns to the Carver Museum to present their latest project, Hands That Steal From Other Mouths which will combine a not to miss teach-in and live video game performance.
Wednesday, June 11, continues the symposium with a screening of Little Trumpet, directed by Megan Trufant Tillman and produced by Kimiko Matsuda-Lawrence from 12 – 1:30 p.m. Evening programming begins with the artist talk for the Carver Museum's current group exhibition, Second Sight, from 6 – 7 p.m. The day will conclude with Up to Us, a panel in collaboration with community builder Salihah Saadiq and moderated by the Director of the City of Austin's Office of Equity and Inclusion, Dr. Lindsey Wilson, on how Black leaders in education and community organizing are persevering with their work from 7:30 – 9 p.m.
Saturday, June 14, festivities start with a car show and contest landing at the G. W. Carver Branch Library parking lot at 11 a.m., followed by educational programming inside the Carver Museum from 12 – 3 p.m. Grounds open at 3 p.m. for the Carver’s Community Cookout and Music Festival featuring carnival-style games, live music, vendors, art activations, educational workshops, and food. The evening concludes with live performances by Houston legend, Chalie Boy, and hometown hero, Tameca Jones. The event is free, open to the public and family friendly.
Thursday, June 19, marks the festival's culmination. The day begins at 2 p.m. with a remembrance ceremony in the Carver's Boyd Vance Theatre and ends at 4 p.m. with the ringing of the Freedom Bell.
The George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural, and Genealogy Center is thrilled to host the 6th annual Stay Black and Live 2025, celebrating the spirit of Juneteenth and showcasing the rich tapestry of Black culture in Austin. Carver Museum ATX Foundation was established in 2022 by community stakeholders invested in the growth, expansion, and preservation of the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center in Austin, Texas. The Foundation's primary mission is to help the Museum build a global brand that sets the standard for the preservation and exhibition of Black history and creative expression. This is accomplished by helping to build the museum's capacity through advocacy, outreach, education, and solicitation of funds to support major programs and infrastructure projects.
