Austin Climate Action and Resilience has awarded a $10,000 Food Waste Innovation Grant to local nonprofit Keep Austin Beautiful to launch its Zero Waste Heroes program. In collaboration with the Austin Independent School District, this initiative will provide direct support to three school campuses: Overton Elementary, Marshall Middle, and Eastside Early College High School. The program aims to reduce landfill waste, engage the school community, and build a lasting culture of zero waste.

The Food Waste Innovation Program provides a platform for community partners to test and expand creative solutions to prevent, rescue, repurpose, and capture food waste with the goal of keeping more organic material out of landfills.

“This grant empowers local organizations to turn creative ideas into real solutions for our city,” said Zach Baumer, Director of Austin Climate Action and Resilience. “Engaging young people in reducing emissions through lowering food waste is a win for our community and our environment.”

Keep Austin Beautiful’s Zero Waste Heroes program will combine hands-on activities with classroom lessons to equip K-12 students with practical tools for waste reduction. Age-appropriate lessons will introduce concepts of composting, recycling, and landfill diversion. Keep Austin Beautiful staff will lead interactive activities to reinforce learning and inspire lasting behavior change. Students, teachers, staff, and families will be directly involved in fostering a stronger culture of sustainability across the participating campuses.

“Keep Austin Beautiful is thrilled to partner with the City of Austin and Austin ISD on the Zero Waste Heroes program,” said Rodney Ahart, Chief Executive Officer at Keep Austin Beautiful. “Together, we aim to empower students, teachers, and staff to embrace zero-waste practices, fostering a lasting positive impact on our schools and neighborhoods.”

“We’re excited to team up with the City of Austin and Keep Austin Beautiful to advance composting and landfill waste diversion at schools,” said Darien Clary, Director of Sustainability at Austin ISD. “By engaging our students, teachers, and staff to build a campus culture of zero waste, everyday actions turn into lifelong habits that strengthen both our schools and our community.”

This is the second grant awarded through the Food Waste Innovation Program. Last year, The Refugee Collective was awarded the grant and diverted nearly 30 tons of food waste from local restaurants, producers, and their own certified organic farm. The grant also supported compost production for their crops and educational workshops using food scraps for natural dyeing.

The Food Waste Innovation Program aligns with the City of Austin’s ambitious waste reduction, organics composting, and circular economy goals outlined in the Austin Climate Equity Plan, Austin Resource Recovery Comprehensive Plan, Austin/Travis County Food Plan, and our city’s goal of reaching zero waste by 2040.
