AUSTIN, Texas – The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced that the City of Austin has been awarded $32 million to replace the Barton Springs Road Bridge.

The Bridge Investment Program grant funding will allow the City to replace the existing Barton Springs Road Bridge, which consists of the original 99-year-old south structure and a north structure, a 78-year-old addition to the original, with a new bridge that will widen the current structure’s deck.

Structurally, the current bridge is in fair condition but is nearing the end of its useful life and does not meet current design standards. This new bridge would connect to the existing active transportation network on Barton Springs Road, provide bicycle and pedestrian facilities and resolve the problematic pinch point that creates a gap in the Barton Springs Road All Ages and Abilities Bicycle network.

In December 2023, City Council officially recommended replacing the bridge and advanced the project to the design phase. However, at the time, there were no funds identified for construction. The 2020 Mobility Bond program funded the design of the bridge. This $32 million grant award will help fund construction.

"When I’m not in DC, you can find me playing soccer at Zilker or swimming in Barton Springs," said U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Austin). "But all of us know that scary feeling of holding your breath as you walk across the 1920’s bridge towards Barton Springs. With these federal dollars, every driver, biker, and pedestrian will be able to breathe easier. With an improved bridge, we can finally get to these Austin gems safely."

"The replacement of the Barton Springs Road Bridge is not just about enhancing connectivity, it’s about creating a more accessible environment for all Austin residents," said Austin Mayor Kirk Watson. "This grant will help us continue in our goal of building a vibrant, diverse transportation network."

"Aging infrastructure should not be a hindrance to the quality of life of Austin residents," said Austin City Manager T.C. Broadnax. "This grant will allow the City to transform the Barton Springs Road corridor to meet the needs of all users."

"The Barton Springs Road Bridge is a key connection for all modes of transportation in our city," said Austin Transportation and Public Works Director Richard Mendoza. "This grant funding will allow us to address the age of the structure as well as reduce current and future maintenance costs."
