About Us

The Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center is dedicated to offering quality outdoor recreation, nature-based education, and cultural arts programs for all ages and abilities. Located on Austin’s East Side along Lady Bird Lake and the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, Camacho is surrounded by opportunities to get outside and stay active. Our programs and camps focus on adventure activities such as biking, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, archery, camping, and more. We also offer adaptive recreation, as well as filmmaking programs featuring an online catalog of more than 100 youth-made films.

Our History

The Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center opened in September 2000 and was dedicated in honor of community matriarch Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho. Mrs. Camacho lived right here in the heart of the Holly neighborhood for more than 40 years and was a passionate advocate for children, education, and her community. She volunteered for many years with the Reading Is Fundamental program, was a trusted figure among neighborhood children, and was deeply involved in local schools and PTAs. Her home also served as one of the first McGruff Houses, providing a safe place for children in need.

Mrs. Camacho dedicated countless hours to improving the lives of her neighbors and the children of her community. Today, her legacy of service, compassion, and connection continues at the Camacho Activity Center, where we strive to build a strong community through engaging programs and opportunities for everyone.

Holly Shores Vision Plan

At the Camacho Activity Center, we love getting our participants out on the water in our kayaks and canoes. For nearly 25 years, we’ve been hauling boats in and out of storage containers and up and down a steep hill to reach our dock. That’s why we’re excited to announce that a new boating storage space and dock will be installed at the Camacho Activity Center as part of the Holly Shores Vision Plan!

The new floating dock will provide on-water storage for kayaks, canoes, and other boating equipment, replacing the containers we currently use. With easier access to our equipment and improved storage, we’ll be able to accommodate more participants and enhance our water programs.

The dock will also feature improved ADA access, allowing individuals of all abilities to more fully participate in our activities. We’re excited about the positive impact these improvements will have on our programs and participants!

Anticipated construction: Spring 2027

Staff
