A July Tradition: The Historic Firecracker Open Returns to Lions Municipal Golf Course

Each Independence Day weekend, one of Austin’s most storied sports traditions takes center stage at Lions Municipal Golf Course: the Firecracker Open. This historic 54‑hole amateur stroke‑play tournament has been a summertime staple since 1946, drawing top talent from across Texas and neighboring states.

Over the decades, the Firecracker Open has earned a reputation as a proving ground for rising golf talent. Past champions include standout local amateurs, collegiate players, and PGA professionals who were on the brink of launching their tour careers. The tournament’s competitive field and rich history continue to make it one of the most anticipated amateur events in the region.

Nearly 400 golfers take part each year, beginning with two qualifying tournaments that determine who advances to the main event over the July 4 weekend. Spectators and media alike turn out to celebrate the tradition, the competition, and the legacy of Muny as a beloved Austin landmark.
