Wildflower Meadows Need Mowing

Our Operations and Maintenance Division will begin mowing wildflower meadows in mid‑July 2026. We don’t choose a specific date for mowing. Instead, we base the timing on the condition of the wildflowers and other vegetation. Before mowing begins, staff review several factors:

  1. How many wildflowers have produced mature seeds that can spread naturally for next year’s growth.
  2. Whether unwanted or invasive plants – such as Johnson Grass, Bastard Cabbage, and other noxious species – have not yet gone to seed. Mowing early helps reduce the spread of these plants.
  3. The availability of mowing crews who must complete this work along with their regular mowing responsibilities across more than 375 parks.

Because we had a longer and wetter spring this year, some wildflowers may still be blooming. This means a few flowers may be mowed before they are fully finished. However, mowing is needed to prevent invasive plants from spreading their seeds.

Mowing will continue from mid‑July through August.
