APO Discipline Objection 2025-2584, Officers Austin Zarling, and William McRae
In response to Police Chief Lisa Davis, Austin Police Oversight (APO) disagrees with the Austin Police Department chain of command administering low-level discipline to Officers Zarling and McRae. APO’s investigation into the complaint confirmed that the two officers approached the complainant on bicycles. The complainant stepped briefly into the street to let them pass before returning to the sidewalk. Despite the complainant's explanation, officers detained and used force against them without proper cause or informing them that they were under arrest, resulting in unjustified charges. APO recommends that both Officers receive more severe discipline, including suspensions of 1-5 days.
