Camp Counselor with Youth

The Summer Playgrounds Program wants to inspire Austin youth to learn, play, protect, and connect by creating lots of fun and diverse experiences in our parks and natural spaces. Activities are planned based on a summer and weekly theme as well as taking advantage of each park locations unique amenities. 

The Summer Playgrounds Program is a FREE Drop-In Program for children 6-12 years of age Monday through Friday 9 AM to 5 PM. Summer Playgrounds park locations are equally spread out between North, Central, and South Austin to better serve families. No advanced registration required, but registration is required at the park site the first day of attendance. Online registration is encouraged beginning April 2024 - www.austintexas.gov/parks

Philosophy

The Summer Playgrounds Program seeks to foster healthy living, character building, and teamwork through collaborative and active play. With intentional programming developed specifically for youth ages 6 to 12, the Summer Playgrounds Program creates a space for youth to engage in activities that provides opportunities for youth to learn tools and develop skills that can help lead them to a higher quality of life.

Character Building

Fostering a safe environment for students to build positive self-esteem, learn to communicate social and emotional needs in healthy ways, and develop individuality while maintaining a spirit of collaboration.

Teamwork

Providing opportunities for participants to learn their own strengths, appreciate the contributions of others, and learn the importance of encouraging others in order to build healthy and positive relationships within their communities.

Healthy Living

Teaching participants nutritional and fitness habits and providing information that helps lead to healthy living.

 

Sample Day of Activities:

  • Morning welcome and Get-Together
  • Arts & Craft projects with Totally Cool, Totally Art (TCTA)
  • T.E.A.M Time - teamwork and team building
  • Sports Challenges - introduction to various sports such as kickball and dodge ball
  • Einstein Time - activities that assist with continued learning throughout the summer
  • Swimming at the park pool (depends on park location)
  • Cool Down "Water Fun"
  • Visits from city departments like Fire, Police, and EMS
  • AM & PM Snacks

A collaborative partnership with the Central Texas Food Bank has allowed us to serve lunch to our program participants.
