Austin Equity and Inclusion is proud to announce its first-ever Welcoming Week, taking place from September 12–21, 2025.

Austin Equity and Inclusion is proud to announce its first-ever Welcoming Week, taking place from September 12–21, 2025. As part of a national initiative, Welcoming Week celebrates the contributions of immigrants and the importance of building strong connections across all communities - both immigrant and non-immigrant.

This year’s national theme, “The Stories We Share,” centers on the power of personal narratives to unite us. It’s an invitation for Austinites to come together, listen deeply, and share stories that reflect the strength and diversity of our city. From the voices of newly arrived residents to generations of Austinites with immigrant roots, each story adds to the vibrant tapestry of our community.

“The Stories We Share” is more than a theme—it’s a call to action,” said Dr. Lindsey Wilson, Director of Austin Equity and Inclusion. “We’re inviting everyone in Austin to come together and build bridges across backgrounds, cultures, walks of life, because the future of our city depends on how well we know and care for each other.”

As part of this citywide celebration, the City of Austin is partnering with local organizations, community leaders, and cultural institutions to host events that uplift immigrant voices, honor cultural heritage, and encourage inclusive storytelling. These events will include storytelling circles, cultural showcases, art exhibits, community panels, and opportunities for civic engagement.

Welcoming Week is about connection, belonging, and community, “We are committed to a city where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued,” City Council Member José “Chito” Vela said, “The many contributions of our immigrant communities positively impact the quality of life of all Austinites.  Our city is shaped by many journeys. We recognize and celebrate the rich contributions of our immigrant communities.”

Austin is home to a globally connected population, with residents who speak over 100 languages and represent cultures from every corner of the world. Immigrant families help drive innovation, enrich our cultural life, and strengthen our local economy.

Austinites are invited to attend Welcoming Week events and to share stories or words of welcome on social media using the hashtag #WelcomingWeekATX. “Austin Welcomes You” signs in multiple languages are available to download and show support.

The goal: continue to build a more inclusive Austin—one story at a time.
