FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASERelease Date: Jun. 05, 2025

Throughout July, Austin Parks and Recreation will offer special programming, events and educational opportunities.
On June 5, 2025, Austin City Council and Austin Parks and Recreation announce the official City Proclamation recognizing the vital role parks and recreation play in improving the health, wellness and quality of life for all Austin residents. The City of Austin joins communities across the nation in celebrating National Park and Recreation Month this July.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Park and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), a leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation. NRPA champions and supports the field of parks and recreation through professional development, advocacy, grants and programs, research, and publications.
“Parks and recreation are essential to the physical, mental and social well-being of our community,” said Jesús Aguirre, Director of Austin Parks and Recreation and Chair of the NRPA Board of Directors. “Austin’s green spaces foster active lifestyles, support childhood development, contribute to economic prosperity, and preserve the natural beauty that makes Austin a special place to live and play.”
Throughout July, Austin Parks and Recreation will offer special programming, events and educational opportunities designed to encourage community members to explore and enjoy local parks, trails, swimming pools, sports facilities and natural areas. These activities celebrate the many ways parks contribute to environmental sustainability, community resilience and overall quality of life in central Texas.
