City of Austin collaborates with reuse organizations to reduce waste during annual move-out season
AUSTIN, TX – Austin Resource Recovery is partnering with the University of Texas (UT) Office of Sustainability, and the UT Office of the Dean of Students to host MoveOutATX July 26–31. The annual event offers a convenient way for students to dispose of gently used items in a sustainable way. Students can drop off furniture, household items, small appliances, clothing, cleaning supplies, unopened food and more at five donation stations throughout West Campus from 11 a.m.– 6 p.m. daily. Items will only be accepted during operating hours.
Additionally, the Free Furniture Market returns for its fourth year. Participating reuse organizations will transfer donated furniture pieces from the donation stations to the market at the UT Austin Whitaker Courts Parking Lot. Items will be made available to Austinites on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must be able to load and transport items themselves and will be required to sign a liability waiver. The market will be open July 26–31, 6:30–8 p.m. There is a limit of two pieces of furniture per person. Furniture sets (dining room table and chairs, matching chairs, nightstand pair, etc.) are considered one item.
Community volunteers are needed to staff the Free Furniture Market. Volunteers can sign up for shifts at AustinTexas.gov/MoveOutATX.
“MoveOutATX gives students an easy way to donate gently used items instead of sending them to the landfill,” said Richard McHale, director of Austin Resource Recovery. “It’s a win for zero waste and a boost for our local reuse economy.”
