Oakwood Cemetery: The Art of Peter Mansbendel, Swiss Master Woodcarver

The 24th annual Austin Studio Tour is a free citywide celebration of art featuring hundreds of locations, produced by Almost Real Things. This event will be produced and hosted by the Oakwood Cemetery as a participant of the Austin Art Studio Tour on November 14th and 15th. The event is to honor the life and art of Swiss American woodcarver, Peter Mansbendel (1883-1940). Peter Mansbendel is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Section 1, in the Shipe Lot. Mansbendel is known for his traditional woodcarvings featured in universities, monuments, and homes in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. 

Douglas R. Oliver is a scholar, artist, and author who will be presenting about the life, techniques and works of Peter Mansbendel, while a selection of carvings and images by both Mansbendel and Oliver will be displayed in the chapel’s gallery for visitors to view.
