Historic Properties

Austin has nearly 700 historic landmarks, 8 local historic districts, and 18 National Register historic districts. While different designation types [link to Historic Designation page] have different regulations, the Historic Landmark Commission reviews proposed exterior changes to all these resources, as well as demolitions and relocations of 45+ year-old buildings eligible for landmark designation.

Is my property historic?

Currently Designated Historic Properties

To find out whether a property is historically designated at the local or national levels, see the Historic Property Viewer map below (larger version here). These properties require historic review [link to Historic Review page] for exterior changes and new construction.

If your property is not on the map, check the historic resource surveys page [link to Historic Resources Surveys page] to see if it has been identified as a potential historic landmark or historic district. You can also find more information on specific historic districts [link to Historic Districts page].

Potentially Historic Properties

If your property is not currently designated, it could still be eligible for historic designation:

  • Historic resource surveys identify places that help tell important stories or retain distinctive architecture or landscapes, highlighting potential landmarks and historic districts across the city. Surveys document places through fieldwork and find out their stories through community and archival research. Being included in a survey does not automatically lead to historic designation. See our historic resource surveys page [link to Historic Resources Surveys page] for more information.
  • The Research Guide (guía en español) provides guidance on researching buildings and neighborhoods.
