Gillis Street Water and Wastewater Pipeline Renewal

Two Austin Water workers using an excavator to dig for pipelines under a street.

We're replacing aging pipes on Gillis Street to improve your water service.

The Gillis Street project is part of Renewing Austin, Austin Water's ongoing program to replace aging water and wastewater mains throughout the city. This work conserves water, improves service reliability and reduces costs from frequently breaking lines.

The project will replace approximately 1,400 linear feet of water main and 1,700 linear feet of wastewater main on Gillis Street between Casey Street and Philco Drive. Austin Capital Delivery Services will manage construction on Austin Water's behalf.

Timeline

Construction began in February 2025 and is expected to take approximately 10 months.

What to Expect During Construction

  • Street and lane access — Lanes will be closed during construction but streets will remain open. You will always have access to your home. Driveway access may be limited briefly on one or two days during active work.
  • Working hours — Work is expected Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Some weekend work may be required. The City's noise ordinance applies after 10 p.m.
  • Water service — Your water will likely be turned off for a few hours on a single day during construction. Crews will place door notices before any planned shutoff. In rare cases, an emergency may require an unplanned shutoff, but we work to avoid this.
  • Lawns and landscaping — Most work will be limited to the City's right-of-way, which extends 10–15 feet back from the curb. If you have irrigation pipes, landscape features or retaining walls in the right-of-way, they may need to be moved before construction on your street. Repairs to personal property left in the right-of-way are the responsibility of the property owner.
  • Repaving — Trenches will be repaired as work progresses. When the full project is complete, streets will be repaved using a mill and overlay process.
