Austin, TX - Austin Watershed Protection is proud to release its 2025 State of Our Environment Report, providing a comprehensive look at the city’s environmental conditions, trends, and progress across the community. The report is available at AustinTexas.gov/Environment

The report highlights a year of meaningful environmental gains, alongside emerging challenges tied to climate change, drought, and evolving regulatory conditions.

“Austin continues to make measurable progress in protecting our natural resources, even as we face increasing environmental pressures,” said Austin Watershed Protection Environmental Officer Liz Johnston. “This report reflects both our achievements and the urgency of continued action to safeguard Austin’s environment for future generations.”

Highlights from the 2025 Report:

  • Persistent drought conditions continued to strain water resources
  • Austin continues advancing its Climate Equity Plan despite funding and policy challenges
  • Particulate pollution in the air has improved while ground-level ozone pollution has worsened
  • The City acquired more than 70 acres of public parkland and permanently conserved nearly 300 acres of protected wildlands to ensure water quality and preserve endangered species habitats

The report includes “A Bend to the River,” a 10-minute video that takes an in-depth look at the erosion stabilization project in Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park. This project helps protect existing parkland, a key component in providing open space for community members.

The 2025 State of Our Environment Report serves as both a benchmark and a call to action. Austin celebrates important environmental progress but needs continued investment, innovation, and community collaboration to address rising temperatures, air quality concerns, and water scarcity. It will require a sustained effort to ensure a healthy environment for all Austinites.
