Construction to Begin on Asian American Resource Center and Rutherford Stormwater Improvements Project
Austin Watershed Protection will begin construction this month on the Asian American Resource Center and Rutherford Stormwater Improvements project. The initiative will improve the quality of stormwater flowing to Little Walnut Creek while enhancing public spaces at the Asian American Resource Center and the City of Austin's Rutherford Campus.
The project addresses water quality challenges in the 132-acre Rutherford Tributary drainage area. The watershed suffers from elevated nutrient levels, poor stream habitat, and stream stability issues that affect Little Walnut Creek.
The project will create cleaner water by expanding an existing biofiltration pond, adding a wetland area, and constructing a new stream and rain garden. Portions of the existing concrete channel will be modified to better control flooding and create a more natural stream habitat. Limestone blocks will replace concrete-lined side slopes, and vegetated concrete block matting will also be installed. New amenities will be added to the public space as well, including an urban trail, two pedestrian bridges, a play area, and landscaping.
Construction is expected to last about one year. Work will take place in the field behind the Asian American Resource Center, located at 8401 Cameron Road, and the concrete channel near the City of Austin Rutherford Campus at 1520 Rutherford Lane.
