Nothing Beating Home: A Documentary Screening and Community Discussion
In partnership with the Highlander Center of New Market, Tennessee, the George Washington Carver Museum presents Nothing Beating Home, featuring a free screening of "Soldiers United for Cash” by Ariel Santschi (2001), followed by a community discussion with Hakeem Adewumi and Emma Cager.
Known as the pioneer of the chopped and screwed sound, DJ Screw was one of the most prolific and influential hip-hop artists Texas has ever produced. Despite his untimely passing in 2000, the impact of his music lives on. With performance footage, videos, interviews and revealing behind-the-scenes clips, this documentary provides an intimate portrait of the mix-tape superstar and a glimpse into the world of the Screwed Up Click.
This screening will be followed by a discussion with “Seeing Further” solo exhibiting artist Hakeem Adewumi, looking at our relationship to migration and the political necessity of bringing your work home as a Southerner.
The screening is free to attend, simply RSVP. We’ll see you in class.
