Community Safety Listening Session
Based on community feedback, OPO added a new Community Safety Listening Session to the Working Group agenda. The purpose of this session is to give community members a dedicated space to share priorities, ask questions, and provide feedback on public safety.
On August 14, OPO welcomed Commissioner Jerry Joe Benson (LGBTQ Quality of Life Commission & Joint Inclusion Committee) to share background and insights on a developing Community Liaison proposal. View the proposal here.
Following the presentation, community members discussed:
- Ways to strengthen transparency and accountability with APD
- Concerns and priorities related to community safety for all Austinites
A detailed summary of this discussion is available in the After-Action Report
OPO After Action Report
Starting this quarter, OPO will publish an After-Action Report after each quarterly Work Group meeting. The report will summarize:
- Community Safety Listening Session discussions
- Key takeaways and learnings

What We Do
When people have concerns or complaints about potential police misconduct,
those concerns need to be heard, investigated, and resolved. At Austin's Office of
Police Oversight (OPO), everything we do is to promote an atmosphere of earned
trust between Austinites and the Austin Police Department (APD). We do this by
Goal: improve navigation and
making it easy, accessible, and safe for Austinites to provide feedback on their
interactions with APD.
We make sure that:
accessibility to published documents
There are several reporting options available (email, an online form,
telephone, etc.).
The process is not overwhelming or complex.
All complaints are investigated.
People can choose to remain anonymous.
The community understands what we do, how we do it, and how to reach us.
Our office also:
